GE appliances keep getting smarter, as evidenced by the new GE French door bottom-freezer refrigerator, which boasts such electronic-rich features as a water dispenser with hands-free, autofill technology. A similar transformation is taking place with the tools GE service technicians use to conduct preventative maintenance, appliance tune-ups and repairs.

Introducing New Field Inspector – NewFi

The New Field Inspector system (or NewFI), launched in 2012 by GE Factory Service, gives GE Appliances service technicians the repair technology to make more accurate assessments and diagnoses of possible appliance performance issues.

NewFi (if the consumer allows) lets GE Appliances service technicians to connect laptop computers to the electronic controls of new GE Appliances products and gain access to a wealth of diagnostic data. Armed with this information, the technician can quickly identify failing or failed parts – leading to faster and more accurate service.

“This technology gives the technician precision and accuracy to immediately identify a faulty part and reduce time in the customer’s home,” said a GE Appliances technical training manager. GE Appliances service technicians had to spend a lot more time troubleshooting the appliance prior to the introduction of NewFi. While using the best diagnostic tools available at the time, service technicians still had to make assumptions about which parts needed replacement – assumptions that could lead to multiple service calls, reduced customer satisfaction, and increased service costs.

Engineering Better Appliances & Better Parts

In addition to quicker service calls, NewFi is also helping GE Appliances engineers develop the next generation of products, as NewFI transmits diagnostic information that engineers can use to boost product reliability that can be used to better optimize part performance.

The NewFI system is just one of many innovations developed by GE to enhance and improve appliance repairs. The company’s automated truck routing system and truck parts stock program have greatly reduced the amount of time required to obtain replacement parts.
